WPATH Assessments & Reports

We collaboratively support you to be who you are, centring dignity, bodily autonomy, and radical affirmation.

We take WPATH assessments seriously

…but not in the way you might think.

A WPATH assessment involves a series of collaborative sessions with a trained and qualified clinician, guided by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care designed to evaluate your readiness and capacity to make medical decisions.

Whilst these are not legally required, your Surgeon or Medical Professional may have asked you to undergo a WPATH Assessment and obtain a WPATH Report prior to gender affirming surgery or commencing gender affirming hormone treatment. They will have their own reasons for requiring this, however it is often about clarity, preparedness, and due diligence prior to irreversible or semi-irreversible medical interventions.

If you require a WPATH assessment prior to your gender affirming medical treatment, then we want to ensure this is done thoroughly, efficiently, and effectively to ensure this does not pose any additional barriers to your treatment.

Our goal is to support you, not judge you, and we take that very seriously.

Our Approach to WPATH assessments

We follow the ‘social model’ of health care, which focuses on the social, structural, and environmental factors that affect a trans or gender-diverse person’s health and wellbeing, rather than viewing trans identity as a medical problem.

Our approach:

  • Does not view gender diversity as a pathology to be fixed

  • Supports autonomy, dignity, and self-determination

  • Considers social determinants of health: stigma, discrimination, access to supportive environments, legal recognition

  • Emphasises affirmation, support, and community empowerment

  • Healthcare interventions are optional and client-driven, not gatekept

This means that our approach to WPATH assessments is to work collaboratively with you to address and remove any and all barriers to you living fully as choose.

We consider it an honour to be able to support you in this.

What to expect from a WPATH assessment with Homeplace

This process is designed to support, not question, your identity and goals. We do this by satisfying your Surgeons/Medical Professional’s requirements, whilst supporting you to feel confident, safe, informed, and empowered about your healthcare decisions.

The process usually takes three sessions:

  1. Exploring your gender journey & gender-affirming medical treatment goals, plans, and expectations

  2. Discussing relevant psychological, medical, and social factors

  3. Collaboratively reviewing your report to ensure accuracy and understanding, and that you’re comfortable with the final report.

Additionally, we will invite you to complete some online questionnaires in your own time, usually between the first and second sessions.

As every person and their gender journey is unique, additional sessions may be offered if needed.

Once you are happy with the report and everything has been finalised, we then forward the report to your requesting Surgeon/Medical Professional, along with a copy to you and to any other relevant health care professional (such as your GP) where appropriate and when agreed upon by you.

The timing for this process depends on a number of things: your timeline, your Surgeon’s schedule, our clinicians’ availability, etc. Please let us know your time considerations and we will work with you to ensure the process is completed in time.

Please see our Fees for info regarding costs. We are passionate about supporting trans and gender diverse people to affirm their identity and do not want financial barriers to be prohibitive. Please discuss any financial needs or concerns you may have with us.
